About Tim

Tim had to have an Esophagogastroduodenscopy (EGD) with a biopsy and dilation today. Which means he was given some nice drugs, had a camera stuck down his throat, and then they took a little bit of tissue to have tested. Oh, and they stretched it out (dilation). It's about as much fun as it sounds, although he didn't seem too bothered by it.

Diagnosis: Eosinophilic Esophagitis. His esophagus is inflamed due to an allergy (food, environmental or both), acid reflux, or a combination of the allergy and reflux. He's going to have two separate medicines to take, which I will probably have to remind him of all the time, which will work to help both of those issues. He'll still need to have more dilation done, but this treatment should help in the long run.

Tim has had a long history of getting food stuck while he's eating. It's not choking, he can still breathe, the food just gets stuck before it makes it's way into his stomach. It's terrifying to see and really annoying for him, especially since it often happens at restaurants. The worst was at a barbecue place in Colorado Springs. A piece of meat got so stuck that he had to have surgery to have it removed. Scary!

We also found out that he does not have Celiac Sprue, a gluten allergy, at least not yet. It seems to show up later in life for people in the Kelly family. Fingers crossed that he doesn't have to worry about that. He likes his beer!

And just as a nice payback for posting an awful picture of me drugged up on Facebook, here's Tim, post procedure:

So sleepy. :)
